Andreas Widhoelzl wins at home

In the absence of the World Cup leader Janne Ahonen, Andreas Widhoelzl won the first ski flying event of the season held in Bad Mitterndorf, Austria. Norway's Roar Ljoekelsoey was second, while Poland's Adam Małysz completed the podium in third.

After good jumps in qualification and training rounds, Andreas Widhoelzl was starting as a big favourite in the competition. In the first round, his 197,5 metres saw him into second position after Roar Ljoekelsoey, who jumped 199 metres. But in the second leg, the Austrian soared to impressive 206,5 metres and edged out Ljoekelsoey (203,5 metres). Adam Małysz finished third after his leaps of 195,5 and 206,5 metres. He was ahead of another Austrian, Thomas Morgenstern (193,5 and 205,5 metres) and the Czech Republic's Jakub Janda (194,5 and 198,5 metres).

Despite the absence of the best Finnish ski jumper of the season, the Finns didn't let to forget about them. Risto Jussilainen, who has been making his comeback in the World Cup competitions, finished in 7th place with his jumps of 195,5 and 196,5 metres. However, the vice-leader of the World Cup, Martin Hoellwarth, should have done better: his two efforts of 191,5 and 194 metres gave him 11th place.
The results of the competition didn't bring any crucial changes into the World Cup overrall standings: Janne Ahonen still leads with 1,260 points, 519 points over Austria's Martin Hoellwarth (741 points). The Czech Republic's Jakub Janda is third in the overall rankings with 717 points.
